During the Japanese era, when Japanese manufacturers imported a broad variety of pineapple cultivars and established several processing companies, pineapple became an important component of Taiwan's economy. Taiwan had become the world's third-largest pineapple exporter by the late 1930s. When pineapple production in Taiwan turned to domestic sales and the usage of fresh pineapple, local bakeries looked for ways to employ the excess in pastries.
